Argentina and the World
from the Viceroyalty to the Present Day

Argentine founding fathers and presidents

The Club Francés presents this new course led by attorney Oscar Jiménez Peña, spanning 8 weekly sessions (date and time to be confirmed). An overview of our history from the first viceroy to the return to democracy, alongside a review of the most prominent world events during each era.

Led by:
Oscar Jiménez Peña

An overview of 250 years of Argentine history, from the First Viceroyalty to the dawn of democracy in 1983

Course Dynamics:

a) In a first part lasting no more than 20 minutes, the historical-political context of Argentina will be discussed, outlining the period corresponding to each session.

For example, the first class will cover what a viceroyalty was, when and why it was created, who the viceroys were, and key details about each to establish historical and political context.

b) And in what we might call the “second part,” we focus on world events, placing emphasis on history, politics, and general culture. While we had viceroys here (to continue the example), the United States was undergoing a revolution, Bolívar was born, the Jesuits were persecuted, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were guillotined in France, Goya was painting the Spanish court, and Captain Cook was claiming Australia for the British Crown.

Each session will feature slideshows with photos, paintings, and illustrations of historical figures and events, alongside numerous maps to visualize the evolution—emergence or downfall—of states and empires.

Class Outline:

1) What was happening in the world during the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata -1776–1810-
2) What was happening in the world during Latin American independence -1810–1850-
3) What was happening in the world during national organization -1850–1880-
4) What was happening in the world during the Centennial, immigration, and progress -1880–1910-
5) What was happening in the world during the Sáenz Peña Law and Radicalism -1910–1930-
6) What was happening in the world before Perón became president -1930–1945-
7) What was happening in the world after World War II -1945–1960-
8) What was happening in the world as we emerged from darkness into light -1960–1983-
